Welcome to Digital Photography

Welcome to Introduction to Photography! I have been teaching  Photography I and II and The Museum Experience, Two Dimensional Design and Graphic Design I and II  in an online format for the past 12 years in addition to my work as Co-Chair or the Visual and Performing Arts Department at Albertus where I have been teaching full time for the past 38 years......  The class revolves around creating a portfolio of images.  Your grade will be based on a combination of the portfolio you create and your participation in supporting this online learning experience and of each other. Class runs from January 16th - March 10th 2018 .

If you wonder if you need to be a “geek” in order to succeed in this class, don’t worry.  I have designed it to be taken by non-artist-non-computer students.  The main issue is to have a good working computer with a high speed broadband connection and the willingness to dig in and have some fun.  If you don't have a decent Windows or Apple Computer, you can work on any public computer at school....

The first week will be about getting up to speed in creating your accounts and getting your software image editing program working.

I don't use eLearning for my online classes as it is somewhat clunky in handling visual portfolios and blogging.   I host the syllabus on my website, jnevins.com.  Take a look around there to look at my teaching philosophy, syllabi, portfolios of my own work, tutorials and more...

New this semester:  I have discovered an online Photo Editor that promises to be as powerful as Photoshop, for our purposes and is totally free and ready to use.  Watch the video I just created on getting started with Pixlr.

Important!.... click on the link in the email I will have blogger send you it will be from Jerry (me)...  There are instruction on creating an account at blogger and joining the class blog... you don't need to create your own blog... just join the class one..

Everything you need to succeed in this class is linked in the upper right hand side of the blog. The syllabus is your week to week road map.  Be sure to read it each time you set out to go shooting.  In it are videos on how to edit your work and tips on what makes for a strong image.

With my 2 grandsons, Parker and Kieran

I am at Albertus Monday through Thursday and you are always welcome to email me to come in for one on one tutoring.  I check my email in the morning and every evening and that is the best way to stay in touch with me.

For the first week, I'd like you to post a short bio and picture to introduce yourself.  Include the kind of camera you will be using, either a digital camera or a phone.  The cameras in phones have gotten so good that I no longer see it as an impediment to succeeding in this class.  (Your work still needs to be edited though).
